Nation's First Robotics Engineering Program

By Rita Stange ConnectPress Staff Writer
Got imagination and want to design robots? This opportunity can be yours.

The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), in Worcester, Mass. will offer the nation’s first bachelor’s degree program in robotics engineering in the fall of 2007. The program will be offered jointly by the Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering departments.

GrĂ©tar Tryggvason, Professor and Department Head of Mechanical Engineering, at WPI said the focus of the program is two-fold. “First and foremost, it is to give students the technical ability to build robotics devices. That is, to integrate the mechanical, computational and electrical parts into one working device,” he said. The second objective is to stimulate the students to think of new applications for robots and to give students initiative to be imaginative and design new gadgets, he added.
