Computer-aided layout

Got this note from Thomas Scrutchfield:

Hello Joel,

I'm a 49 year old carpenter with an idea for revolutionizing the
construction industry by taking CAD technologies to the jobsite.

I'd love to hear the opinion of some builders; this sounds like a really simple and cool idea to me.

I simple and cool idea, yes. This would likely get some traction from those CAD companies that have software that can accurately generate a cut list (which leaves Autodesk out.) I'm thinking Envisioneer, Chief Architect, and a few others.

The technical problems involve the printing. It's not so easy to solve as Scrutchfield would think. On a 12' tape, 1% inaccuracy -- due to printing problems, or even humidity or thermal factors -- translates into almost 1.5". That's not good enough.
