In this fascinating presentation, Raj Patel, Principal Consultant with Arup Acoustics, will give an introduction to the concept of 3D acoustics modeling and some examples of its present-day application . Th e lecture will describe key aspects of acoustics relative to the design of interior spaces - with specific reference to Arup SoundLab, an innovative design tool developed by Arup Acoustics. With parallels to 3D visualization, he will demonstrate how SoundLab is used to create accurate , fully immersive , listening experience s of sound in existing buildings , as well as those yet to be realized.
Most importantly, he will demonstrate how 3D Acoustics Modeling can be used as a design tool to allow clients, architects and other professionals to listen to how spaces sound, compare the sound of one space to another, or benchmark particular designs against key reference spaces. Arup SoundLab takes the fundamental step of allowing acoustics to be described through listening, rather than words and graphs. In turn, it allows architects to design by listening.Speaker
Raj Patel, Principal Consultant, Arup Acoustics, is a classically trained musician, achieving Grade VIII Music Practice (Trumpet) and Musical Theory from Guildhall School of Music, London . Through his experience playing in orchestras and performing in concert halls around the UK , pursuant to an academic background in mathematics and physics, he became interested in the physics of sound and acoustics. In 1992 he graduated with honors , with a Bachelor of Engineering in Acoustics and Vibration , from the University of Southampton Institute of Sound and Vibration Research.
Mr. Patel joined Arup Acoustics in 1992, and has worked in each of Arup Acoustics’ international offices in the UK , China , Australia and the USA . He is the leader of Arup Acoustics’ New York office. A specialist consultant and designer - with a specific experience in music, performing arts, recording, broadcast, education and sports buildings - he has contributed to the design of over 500 buildings in this area of specialization.
